A Heartfelt Thank You to All the Caring Hearts

We at Sagepoint Senior Living Services are overwhelmed with gratitude for the incredible support we received during our end-of-year campaign, Caring Hearts. It is with immense pleasure that we extend our sincere thanks to everyone who contributed to this worthy cause. Your generosity has made a lasting impact on our mission to provide essential care to the most vulnerable members of our community.

Your support has been instrumental in helping us continue offering care, support and respect to enable those in our community to age gracefully. Through the Caring Hearts campaign, we continue our goal to expand community outreach efforts, developing caregiver support and training programs specifically tailored for those caring for loved ones with dementia and other long-term cognitive illnesses.

The Caring Hearts campaign has been a beacon of hope and support, allowing us to reflect on the milestones achieved in providing crucial care to those who need it the most. Denise McCann, Sagepoint’s Chief Nursing Officer, aptly captures the essence of our mission: “Helping our residents be as happy and healthy as possible is what motivates me every day.” It takes a caring heart to support seniors with dementia, and our dedicated staff exemplifies this through their kind disposition, deep understanding of the condition and unwavering commitment.

Lauren Sweeney, Sagepoint Resident Assistant, emphasizes the shared passion within the team. “Our whole team shares the same passion when it comes to providing care for our residents.” This passion is the driving force behind the Caring Hearts campaign, aiming to raise awareness of dementia’s effects on individuals, families and communities.

As we navigate the growing number of Maryland residents living with dementia, expected to increase by 20% in the coming years, your contributions become even more crucial. As a nonprofit serving older adults for nearly 50 years, Sagepoint remains dedicated to helping people stay in their homes for as long as possible. This commitment is upheld by our caregivers who go the extra mile, ensuring our residents receive the care and support they need.

We want to extend our most heartfelt gratitude to every individual and organization that has been a part of the Caring Hearts campaign. Your caring hearts have made a difference, and together, we can continue brightening the lives of those affected by dementia.

Now’s the Time to Walk In Their Shoes

More than six million people in the United States are affected by dementia and this number is growing quickly. With this notable rise, Sagepoint Senior Living Services has been working hard to help spread awareness of the needs and challenges of people with dementia and other cognitive diseases. One of the ways Sagepoint does this is by hosting a “Walk In Their Shoes” event that walked board members and others in the community through a small glimpse of the challenges of dementia.

This was accomplished by our team explaining how our memory care service offers a nurturing, home-like environment that sets a new standard of care for people with memory loss. We went on to further describe how our team listens, watches and learns to tailor individual programs for each resident and deliver our professional care and services with a personal touch.

“Sagepoint has hosted the dementia experience for other community organizations like the Rotary Club of La Plata and Leadership Southern Maryland. “We feel it is important to educate caregivers and family members on dementia and other cognitive issues.” says Denise McCann, Sagepoint’s Chief Nursing Officer. “Empowering them with knowledge and resources gives the extended caregivers tools to navigate care.”

While we work towards accomplishing this mission of spreading dementia awareness, you can help us by donating to our “Remember These Moments” campaign. With your donation, you are helping those affected by dementia, and members of our community have access to resources needed to care for their loved one. We could not provide care and educate the community without your help, so please consider donating today.

Assisted Living vs. Home Care: Which Option Is Right for You?

If you have an elderly loved one who is losing their ability to safely live independently, then you’re no doubt researching senior care options. Two common options for senior care include assisted living and home care. Keep reading to get an overview of both Assisted Living and Home Care and a guide for choosing the route that is right for you and your loved one.

Assisted Living

Assisted living communities provide personal care support services such as meals, medication management, transportation, and assistance with the activities of daily living such as dressing and bathing. This option is ideal for seniors who need daily assistance but still want to maintain as much of their independence as possible. In addition to receiving around-the-clock personal care, seniors often also have the opportunity to participate in recreational activities like book clubs, social outings, gardening and more.

The Pros of Assisted Living

  • The opportunity for social engagement
  • Adapts to changing needs
  • Home-like environment
  • Reduces worry about upkeep and maintenance of home
  • Onsite amenities, such as salon services, visiting physicians, and gardens
  • Various levels of assistance available

The Cons of Assisted Living

  • Less privacy and independence than living at home
  • You may need to transition to a nursing home if your condition deteriorates beyond what is appropriate for assisted living (Senior care communities offering both assisted living and long term care services may be ideal)
  • Assisted living is not the most expensive option, but neither is it the least expensive

Home Care

Many seniors wish to remain in their home for as long as possible, and if only minor assistance is needed, home care is a wonderful option. Home care offers care plans that can be customized to fit the needs of your family and your loved one. Companion care services may consist of ensuring basic safety, light housekeeping, laundry, appointment escort, and more. Personal care services, performed by a CNA, may consist of feeding assistance, medication management, bathing/showering, hair/skin/oral care, toileting assistance, and more.

The Pros of Home Care

  • The ability to age in place
  • The preservation of privacy and freedom
  • If a form of dementia should develop, the familiar surroundings may provide comfort
  • Care is administered by a professional caregiver
  • It may be less costly than other options

The Cons of Home Care

  • The home may not be equipped for changes in mobility and physical abilities
  • You may be at a disadvantage in the case of a medical emergency

Making the Right Choice

When choosing the best option for your loved one, consider these questions:

  • Does your loved one wish to remain at home?
  • Is the home a safe environment, or can changes be made to make it safer?
  • Would they benefit from assistance with medication management?
  • Do they wish to continue preparing their own meals, or would they benefit from meal preparation services?
  • Are they socially isolated?
  • Would they benefit from being part of an active community?
  • Are there any family members that can move in with them, or who they could move in with?
  • Are they in need of around-the-clock care, and is there anyone who can provide the level of care that they need?
  • Are there financial limitations to consider?

By including your senior loved one in the decision-making process and taking their needs and preferences into consideration, you can ensure that you reach a decision that suits every family member.
